Sheriff’s Office Appeals for Witnesses Following Major Crash on Rt. 28

Sterling, VA, September 19, 2023 – Authorities in Loudoun County are urging the public to come forward with any relevant information pertaining to a significant vehicular accident that transpired at 6:52 p.m. on the previous day, along the southbound lanes of Route 28 near Sterling Boulevard.

Initial reports suggest that a black Nissan Altima while heading south on Route 28, collided with a semi-truck. This impact led the truck to not only overturn but also burst into flames. During this sequence of events, a blue Toyota Prius became another victim of the Altima’s trajectory.

Swift actions by bystanders saw the extraction of the semi-truck driver from the burning vehicle, who was later rushed to a nearby medical facility with injuries deemed critical. Meanwhile, both the Altima and Prius drivers were hospitalized but have since been discharged. The investigation is ongoing, with speed suspected to have played a significant role in the incident.

Jose A. Padilla Espinosa, the 18-year-old Altima driver, reportedly without a permanent residence, has been arrested on charges of Forged Tags and Driving Without Insurance. He is currently detained at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center without the option of bond, with the anticipation of additional charges.

The investigative team is especially keen on interacting with anyone who might have been present in the vicinity during the time of the crash or might have observations related to the events preceding the tragic collision.
