Leesburg Police Investigate Threat at Smart’s Mill Middle School

Leesburg, VA (September 19, 2022) – The Leesburg Police Department has been made aware of a social media group chat that references a rumored threat involving Smart’s Mill Middle School.

We have been in communication with Loudoun County Public Schools regarding a rumored social media threat.  The Leesburg Police Department has determined that the social media threat was part of a social media group chat involving multiple individuals.  It has been determined that the social media threat was directed from a specific identified juvenile student at another specific identified juvenile student related to an ongoing dispute, and not a larger population or the school as a whole.  The Leesburg Police Department School Resource Officer assigned to Smart’s Mill Middle School in conjunction with the LPD Criminal Investigation Section continue to investigate the matter.  At the conclusion of the investigation should it be determined that this incident involved potential criminal activity, the findings will be turned over to the Loudoun County Juvenile Court Services Unit regarding criminal charges.

As the investigation continues and out of an abundance of caution, parents can expect extra patrols at the school from LPD during school hours this week due to the social media threat.

The incident remains under investigation by the Leesburg Police Department Criminal Investigation Section in conjunction with the Leesburg Police Department School Resource Officer Unit.  Anyone who has information about the incident is asked to contact Det. M. Pacilla at 703-771-4500 or at mpacilla@leesburgva.gov.  If you wish to remain anonymous please call the Leesburg Crime Line at 703-443-TIPS (8477).  Information can also be sent using TIPSUBMIT via text.  Text 274637 (CRIMES) and begin your message with LPDTIP.
