Two college seniors, both over 21 years old, decided that there was no better way to start the new year
than by stealing beer valued at $20.99 from the Giant. The license plate of the getaway vehicle was
captured, and soon thereafter, the Fairfax County Police responded to a residence in McLean and spoke to
a surprised set of parents, who informed law enforcement that their daughter was in possession of the
vehicle. The investigating officer in Purcellville spoke to the parents, who convinced their daughter and
her boyfriend to return to the store with the purloined beverages. The store was willing to forgo
prosecution as long as restitution was made. When told of the amount, the male, who was the one who
actually stole the beer, balked at paying $20.99 plus tax, fearing that he was being ripped off by the store,
claiming that the beer was only $12.99, based on a mislabeled price tag. He relented when shown the
register scan and paid the full amount.
