The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a single vehicle crash where the vehicle left the roadway and struck a utility pole. The crash occurred shortly after 1 a.m. today in the area of James Monroe Highway (Route 15) near Montresor Road in Leesburg. A Sheriff’s Deputy was running RADAR and observed an SUV traveling northbound on Route 15 at a high rate of speed. The vehicle passed the Deputy’s position and continued traveling well in excess of the posted speed limit. The deputy turned to initiate a traffic stop but quickly lost sight of the vehicle. The deputy continued on Route 15 and discovered that the driver had crashed into a utility pole near Montresor Road, causing the vehicle to catch fire. The deputy utilized a fire extinguisher to extinguish the flames. The driver, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The crash remains under investigation by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit. Anyone who witnessed the crash and who has not already spoken to law enforcement is asked to contact Investigator S. Allen at 703-777-1021.
